Your First Day on Elbark, Hour by Hour

Day 1 on Elbark Cruise begins with a 10:00 Friday departure from Labuan Bajo Harbor, then Kelor Island’s sunrise-hill hike, a Manjarite coral snorkel, and a sunset bat-colony show at Kalong Island before the first onboard dinner. Elbark Cruise is a 37-meter luxury VIP phinisi in Komodo National Park, booked officially through Komodo Luxury, trusted yacht operator (TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice).

Hour by Hour — What Actually Happens on Day 1

Everyone asks the same question before boarding: what does the first day actually feel like, minute to minute? Not the marketing version — the real one, with waiting, walking, and the exact order things happen in. Here is Day 1 on Elbark Cruise’s 3D2N share trip, hour by hour, exactly as it runs on a normal Friday.

09:30 — Check-In at Labuan Bajo Harbor

Guests arrive at the harbor around 09:30, roughly thirty minutes before departure. Bags are tagged and loaded by crew, cabins are assigned on the spot (not pre-picked online), and a welcome drink is served on the aft deck while the rest of the group arrives. For the full pre-departure logistics — what to bring, where exactly to check in, and how the 09:00–10:00 window works — see our Friday departure guide.

10:00 — Departure and the First Hour at Sea

Elbark casts off from Labuan Bajo at 10:00 sharp. The first twenty minutes are spent easing out past the harbor’s fishing boats and smaller liveaboards; once open water opens up, the safety briefing runs on the main deck — life jacket locations, muster point, and basic onboard rules. This is also when most guests do their first lap of the boat: sundeck up top, indoor lounge and dining area on the main deck, cabins below. Phone signal starts to fade here, which is normal — see our Wi-Fi and signal guide if that’s a concern for you.

11:00–12:30 — Kelor Island: The Sunrise Hill (Even at Midday)

Kelor is a small, steep-sided island best known for a short but genuinely tough climb — roughly 30–45 minutes up loose volcanic soil to a summit that opens onto a 360° view of the Flores Sea. It’s called Komodo’s “sunrise hill” because of its shape, but on the Friday afternoon slot it’s just as striking at midday: turquoise shallows on one side, deep blue channel on the other. Not everyone hikes — there’s a shorter loop near the beach and calm water for an early swim while the rest of the group summits.

13:00 — Lunch on the Aft Deck

Back on board, lunch is laid out buffet-style — a mix of Indonesian and Western dishes, fresh fruit, and soft drinks and juices included in the trip. Most guests eat in the shaded outdoor dining area at the stern, where the view is the reason to linger rather than head straight back to the cabin. Dietary requests (halal, vegetarian, allergies) are handled through Komodo Luxury’s concierge before departure — details in our dining and dietary guide.

14:30–16:00 — Manjarite: Slow Snorkel Before Sunset

Manjarite is the calmer of Day 1’s two water stops — a gentler current and shallower reef than some of the Day 2 sites, which makes it a good warm-up for less confident swimmers. Snorkeling gear (mask, fins, life vest) is included and handed out from the tender before each stop; no need to bring your own unless you prefer your own fit. Expect reef fish, soft coral, and — depending on the day — the occasional reef shark cruising the drop-off.

17:00–18:30 — Kalong Island: The Bat Colony at Dusk

This is the stop nobody explains well in advance: Kalong Island isn’t a landing spot. Elbark anchors offshore as the light turns gold, and just before sunset, thousands of fruit bats lift off the mangroves in a single dark stream that can take fifteen to twenty minutes to fully clear the island. It’s watched from the sundeck or the bow, drink in hand, with cameras out — one of the few moments on the whole trip where nobody is looking at their phone for a signal.

19:00 Onward — First Dinner and a Quiet Night at Anchor

Dinner is served shortly after the bats disperse, usually at anchor in a sheltered bay near Kalong or en route toward Padar for Day 2. The entertainment room below deck has movies and karaoke for anyone who wants it, but most of Day 1’s group ends up back on the sundeck under a genuinely dark sky — Komodo National Park has almost no light pollution. By 22:00 the boat is quiet; Day 2 starts early, with Padar’s sunrise climb on the schedule.

Day 1 FAQ

What time does Elbark actually leave the harbor on Friday?

Boarding starts around 09:30 at Labuan Bajo Harbor, and Elbark departs at 10:00 sharp. Arriving on time matters — the boat does not wait for late arrivals, since the Kelor–Manjarite–Kalong route is scheduled tightly to catch the bat colony at sunset.

Do guests actually land on Kelor Island, or just view it from the boat?

Guests do land on Kelor. Tenders shuttle small groups to the beach, where you can either climb the 30–45 minute hill trail or stay at the shoreline to swim. It’s optional either way — nobody is required to make the summit.

Is the Kalong Island stop just for photos, or can we swim there?

Kalong is a viewing stop, not a swim or snorkel site. Elbark anchors offshore at sunset specifically to watch the fruit-bat colony lift off the mangroves; there’s no landing or water activity here, which is part of what keeps the mangrove habitat undisturbed.

How physically demanding is Day 1 compared with the rest of the trip?

Day 1 is the gentlest of the three days. Kelor’s hike is optional and Manjarite’s snorkel is beginner-friendly, unlike Day 2, which includes the steeper Padar climb and the more exposed currents at Manta Point. If mobility or fitness is a concern, Day 1 is a fair test of what the rest of the itinerary will ask of you.

Can I skip the Kelor hike and still enjoy Day 1?

Yes. The beach and shallow water near Kelor’s landing point are calm enough for a swim while the rest of the group hikes, and you’ll still be back on board in time for lunch and the Manjarite snorkel stop.

Day 1 is only the beginning of the route — Day 2 covers Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo Island and Manta Point, and Day 3 closes at Sebayur before returning to Labuan Bajo. See the full 3D2N share trip itinerary for the hour-by-hour breakdown of all three days, or check the 2026–2027 departure calendar to find the next available Friday.
